Loaves and Fishes in Oakley

Loaves and Fishes is a nonprofit agency with a mission to feed the hungry a hot nutritious meal in areas of need including Oakley. Started in 1983 when  Pittsburg residents, Pauline Brisbin and Lucy Zendaez, saw families rummaging for food in dumpsters. Moved by the sight of families struggling to feed themselves they banded together with other concerned residents and started serving lunches out of the basement of St. Peter Martyr Catholic Church in Pittsburg. The first day they served 26 meals.

Last year the organization moved to its current location, the new Loaves and Fishes Oakley Dining Room is located at the Red Man-Pocahontas Hall, 1403 Main Street, Oakley. The Oakley site serves seniors from several centers, and also locals, M-F, from 11am to 12:45pm. Since 1983, Loaves has served over 3.5 million meals in Contra Costa County, with dining rooms in Martinez, Bay Point, Pittsburg, Antioch and Oakley, serving over 100,000 meals a year. Visit their website at: www.loavesfishescc.org to volunteer or make a donation.

It is a free, hot and nutritious meal (not just soup!). All are served without discrimination; anyone can stop by and eat. There is no cost and no donation needed to eat at one of the dining rooms. So, stop and have a meal and even though a donation is not required drop a few dollars in the bucket.
