I sat through the deluge that accompanied the ceremony honoring Freedom High’s 13th graduating class Saturday morning. Normally we are looking for ways hide from the sun, but this day we were clustered and hovering beneath umbrellas. The only ones protected from the drenching were the band members covered with a tent; everyone else was left to battle the elements.
The unseasonable weather did not seem to put a damper on the festivities. One of the only capitulations to the rain and wind were the speeches. Principal Erik Faulkner told us that his prepared speech had been whittled down from five to two pages and that he had asked others who would be featured at the podium that morning to work at “getting to the point”.
The second capitulation to the weather appeared to be that families were deserting the bleachers as soon as their child’s name had been recognized. The obligatory shout outs were performed and families then hustled to the car. All things considered the event was a success. Congratulation to Freedom High’s graduating class of 2011.
