Why are They Painting Markers on the Street?

I received a question from someone living in the Neroly Road area about markings on the streets. These large crosses, the arms are just over four feet across, started appearing a couple of months ago. The obvious question was; What are they for?

It is called a flight cross. It is a survey marker used for aerial photography and mapping. The aerial photo picks up the white cross and field surveyors on the ground then use it to tie in additional surveying. Given the location, perhaps it is for the Hwy 160 connector ramps? That is pure speculation. The city doesn’t issue permits for these types of things.
