Next Door is an online private social network of residents within a neighborhood. To see a quick video visit https://nextdoor.com/. In order to join a neighborhood, residents must verify their address is within the neighborhood boundaries through one of four options (1. Postcard with unique code sent to home address, 2. Phone call to a listed number registered to home address, 3. Credit card billing address which matches home address, 4. Invitation from a previously‐verified neighbor ).
Oakley City staff has worked in collaboration with Next Door staff to understand the opportunity and worked towards facilitating its launch in Oakley for our residents use.
Participating neighbors can share information about break ins, lost pets, or make business recommendations etc. While the City would not be able to see the residents posts, this would become an additional avenue through which we could post information about City activities, road repairs, upcoming events, etc. to all the neighborhoods. or a specific affected neighborhood. If a resident responds to our post, then only that information would be visible to us. As of now there are six active neighborhoods and one pilot that has just launched. Each active group has between 20‐40 members.
Staff have provided Next Door with a Staff contact and broken the City into forty‐three neighborhoods. Next Door has plotted those, Staff reviewed and sent revisions/corrections. The next step upon Next Door making the necessary changes, entails identifying and inviting potential neighborhood leaders to become the first to join and thus become the neighborhood moderator. Additionally, this person would be primarily responsible for recruiting. The first resident to join upon learning of the opportunity would automatically become the moderator.
