Contra Costa Times – Rebranding

Bay Area News Group Announces Rebranding:

TWO REGIONAL NEWSPAPERS

—East Bay Times & The Mercury News —

San Jose (March 1, 2016) – The Bay Area News Group is today announcing its decision to transform its daily newspapers in the East Bay and San Jose/Peninsula markets into two distinct regional publications. In the East Bay the Contra Costa Times and its four editions, along with the Oakland Tribune, The Daily Review and The Argus, will be combined and renamed “East Bay Times.” In Silicon Valley and the Peninsula, the San Mateo County Times will be combined with the San Jose Mercury News under the name “The Mercury News.”

These changes are prompted by a desire to sharpen our content offerings in the Bay Area and are supported by our readers’ request for focused regional news that impacts their daily lives, along with important national and world coverage. In an extensive reader survey conducted in late 2015, our readers also said they want news about their community. While both the East Bay Times and Mercury News will focus on news from their respective regions, we’ll continue to provide specific community news offerings every Friday in each of our 30 weekly publications distributed across the Bay Area.

“Readers have been quite clear with us about how much they like their newspapers and what they want more of, and we’re changing to serve them better,” said Sharon Ryan, president and publisher of the Bay Area News Group. “We’ll give them better focused front page stories that cover national and Bay Area news from each region’s point of view. We’re also adding coverage in content areas we know our readers want more of – in the East Bay that means more environmental news, transportation news and local business news.

“Our journalism continues to draw millions of readers in print and online,’’ Ryan added. “We are committed to enhancing the quality of that journalism and creating an economic model that ensures a thriving B.A.N.G. and a well-informed Bay Area community.”

Here is a brief breakdown of the changes:

— In the East Bay, we will launch the East Bay Times, beginning Tuesday, April 5, 2016, incorporating these papers: Contra Costa Times, East County Times, West County Times, Tri-Valley Times, San Ramon Valley Times, Oakland Tribune, The Daily Review and The Argus. We will add weekly versions of the Oakland Tribune, The Daily Review and The Argus, and deliver them to East Bay Times subscribers in the Oakland, Hayward and Fremont communities.

— In the South Bay and Peninsula, the San Mateo County Times and San Jose Mercury News will become The Mercury News beginning April 5.

— As part of the move, we will create a new East Bay-focused website, eastbaytimes.com, replacing the current contracostatimes.com and insidebayarea.com and joining our existing websites MercuryNews.com, SiliconValley.com and MarinIJ.com.
