I-680 Express Lanes January 2017 Project Update

779Project Update: I-680 Express Lanes between Walnut Creek and San Ramon

Construction Highlights

Things may have appeared quiet to passing motorists on the future

I-680 Express Lanes over the last few months, but a lot of work is going on behind the scenes. Crews are continuing to lay the conduit and pull and splice the fiber needed to power the tolling system and carry tolling data. Toll system installation and testing are ongoing throughout the corridor. You can expect the following activities:

  • Intermittent and alternating nightly closures will occur in the northbound and southbound directions on I-680 from Martinez to Dublin in the lanes closest to the median and in the lane closest to the shoulder. Approved construction work hours are: Monday through Thursday from 8 p.m. – 5 a.m., Friday from 8 p.m. – 7 a.m., Saturday from 7 p.m. to 10 a.m.
  • Construction crews will be present on some city streets during the day near I-680 from Martinez to Dublin with temporary and minor pedestrian detours to maintain public safety.

Construction is a dynamic process and information is subject to change without notice. Work is subject to weather conditions.

Get Ready to Use the Lanes

Want to travel free in the express lanes? Carpools will continue to travel toll-free on the I-680 Contra Costa Express Lanes with a FasTrak Flex® toll tag when they open later this year. Carpools of 2 people will set the toll tag switch to the “2” position and carpools of 3 or more people will set the toll tag switch to the “3” position. Visit bayareafastrak.org for more information about how to get a FasTrak Flex® toll tag.

To find carpool partners, visit carpool.511.org. 511 offers several ridematching options, including apps. These apps, like Scoop and Carzac, are different from Lyft and Uber in that the driver is already making the trip, so you can sign up as a driver or a rider.

It’s a win-win; drivers earn a few dollars for a trip they are making anyway and riders save the cost of driving. Rider and driver both save time by riding in the express lane. Travelers can also register for the 511 Ridematching System which will provide names of people with similar commutes and people can match themselves the old-fashioned way via a phone call or email.
