Project Update: I-680 Contra Costa Express Lanes

Driving in the Express Lanes

Solo drivers’ new choice to pay a toll for a more reliable trip on I-680 in Contra Costa County will become a reality late this summer.

Operating hours on the I-680 Contra Costa Express Lanes will be the same as those on the I-580 Express Lanes and the I-680 Sunol Express Lane in Alameda County: Monday – Friday 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., including holidays. Consistent hours of operation make using the lanes simpler for the traveling public. The mid-day hours also best serve carpools, which are already suffering from operating hours that are too short given existing traffic congestion.

All vehicles, including carpools, need a FasTrak® toll tag to use the lanes. Get a standard FasTrak or FasTrak Flex toll tag to pay to use the lanes; get a FasTrak Flex toll tag to carpool toll-free.

Construction Highlights

Testing of the electronic toll signs and the toll system continues through opening, currently scheduled for late summer 2017. Motorists can expect to see dots, test toll amounts, and notification that testing is underway on the electronic signs. All toll system signs are affixed with static “Under Construction” stickers. While motorists will see prices on the signs, cars will not be tolled during the tests. Nighttime lane closures on I-680 continue throughout the next month.
