Great news! After 18 years since Oakley’s incorporation, plans and work is underway to provide Phase 1 of a Recreation Community Center for the community! The site is located at 1250 O’Hara Ave, also known as the Moura property (south of O’Hara Park Middle School).
The funding now available is $8.2 million (stemming from a grant, capital project reserve funds and the bond refinancing) will only accommodate Phase 1 for now, whereas developing the entire property would likely exceed $20 million dollars. The site plan includes a new parking lot, sidewalks, plaza, patio areas, landscaping, and a multi-purpose building of approximately 9,000 square feet. Also included and made possible by a grant, is a multi-purpose turf area, additional parking, and a new traffic signal for the entrance to the site on O’Hara Avenue at the Chianti Way cross street, and median island modifications on O’Hara Avenue.
We previously asked the public to provide input prior to planning the site and designing the amenities for the new Recreation Center. The survey results indicated that the respondents believed that this is a good site for a permanent Recreation Center, and that the amenities that people would most like to see are a multi-purpose room, meeting/classrooms, kitchen facility, and outdoor patio seating.
The newly proposed building is approximately 9,000 sf. (180 feet long by 60 feet wide). The main areas of the building will include a community room (4,152 sf.), lobby (1,239 ft) and kitchen (1,117 sf.). Other active-use areas of the floor plan worth noting include offices, conference room, stage, and a “green” room. Keep in mind that two of the three modulars, which we now use for programing will be relocated and continue to be used until it is practical to do so, which we hope will time with new funding that will allow phase 2 of this project to happen. The western most modular building will be removed and the northernmost modular will be relocated east of the existing modular buildings.
Now, we invite your input as to the Design Review process for this project. Vote for the color scheme you like best for the multi-purpose building.
Please note that the City Council will review the votes during the Design Review action at the July 11th City Council meeting. The Design Review process applies only to the improvements of the multi-purpose building, reuse/relocation of two of the portable buildings which will continue to be used for classrooms and other recreation programing, the parking lot, plaza, patio areas and landscaping (not the ball field, traffic signal etc.)
